1945 – 1957
A Start in
Challenging Years
Eppendorf's story begins in 1945 in a barrack at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf: Heinrich Netheler and Hans Hinz repair medical equipment – the start of a globally leading life science company. Soon after, groundbreaking innovations follow, such as the Eppendorf Photometer, which brings a great deal of attention to the young company.

A Revolution in
Lab Technology
In the 1960s, Netheler, Hinz, and their team revolutionized laboratory work with the piston pipette. Further innovations followed, such as the closed microliter system. In 1964, Eppendorf moved to Barkhausenweg in Hamburg, where the company headquarters, which still exists today, was established.

Change in Stages
At the company’s 25th anniversary, the founders passed the baton and articulated Eppendorf’s purpose: to develop products that improve people’s living conditions and ensure safety for employees. In the 1970s, Eppendorf drove laboratory automation forward with innovative solutions. In 1975, a new site was established in Oldenburg, Germany.

Internationalization
Eppendorf expands internationally with new sales companies in Europe, Asia, and the USA. A polymer plant is built in North America. At the same time, the company focuses on its core businesses of liquid and sample handling – among other things, by purchasing a centrifuge plant in Leipzig.
